SANDY SHORES — Reconstruction begun on the Blaine County Sheriff's Office earlier, nearly two days after a fuel tanker explosion left much of the building a charred, structurally unsound husk. County engineers now estimate rebuild costs will run into the millions of dollars.
According to the official fire report, the incident began when a gas tanker experiencing mechanical issues pulled over near the station. Dispatcher Valorie Higgins, on a break at the time, was reportedly smoking a cigarette in close proximity to the vehicle. The resulting ignition triggered a explosion that leveled roughly half the facility. No injuries were reported. Higgins has since been unable to be located.
With repair costs far exceeding the department's emergency budget, county officials have moved quickly to secure alternative funding. Blaine County's mayor pledged a symbolic one-dollar personal contribution toward the project, calling it "a gesture of solidarity" with the department during what he described as "a difficult time for everyone involved." and that "he supports emergency officials" and his support of a single dollar reflects that.
The bulk of the rebuild's financing, however, will reportedly come from a new revenue-generating addition to the facility: a licensed "adult-themed entertainment lounge," to be built into the station's east wing aka strip club. County officials describe the venture as a public-private partnership intended to offset renovation costs over the next several years through ongoing operating revenue.
Sources close to the mayor's office note that the mayor personally selected the venue's design, name, and staffing consultants, and has reportedly taken what one county employee called "an unusually hands-on interest" in the project's day-to-day planning — details the mayor's office declined to elaborate on when asked.
When pressed on whether pairing a strip club with a law enforcement facility raised any ethical or logistical concerns, the mayor's office issued a statement calling the arrangement "a creative, forward-thinking solution to a difficult budgetary problem," and noted that "revenue projections look very promising."
Construction crews expect the sheriff's office to be operational again within a month, with the entertainment venue slated to open shortly after. County residents remain divided on the plan, with some praising the initiative as fiscally resourceful, and others questioning whether their local police department really needed a nightclub next door.
